One Afternoon Long Ago Print
11x17 Original Design
I thought it would be groovy to breathe new life into this iconic image from a long ago afternoon in 1967, when members of The Grateful Dead, Big Brother & The Holding Company, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Moby Grape, The Charlatans, and some of their friends, all gathered on the front steps of 710 Ashbury Street in San Francisco, to be immortalized by the photographer Gene Anthony.
I did my best to faithfully recreate it, I was able to find some colored photos, and I even came across some video footage from that day of everyone gathered for this picture and then walking over to Golden Gate Park to take some more.
I spent so many hours studying and staring at this image that I feel intimately connected to it now. It's a trip to think that this silly day of friends and laughter happened over half a century ago. By the time I met these people, their lives had mostly been lived, their stories mostly told. But in the flash of that moment, none of them knew what lay ahead. And it makes me think of all the sunny, balmy light-hearted days I've shared with friends. How they felt endless. It is hard to imagine that one day it will be 60 years later, and those breezy days will feel like a relic from another lifetime. Only if we're lucky will we have evidence that they even happened at all.
Life passes in the blink of an eye, make sure to enjoy it.
For this is all a dream we dreamed one afternoon long ago.❤️⚡️💀
